Q : What preparation is needed by my team?
A : Teams don't need to have participated in a FLUX competition before or to have participated in the Xing Strategy Challenge. They will be fully briefed on the day and facilitators will be on hand throughout to assist. If students wish to prepare there is information on this site about FLUX, including an outline of the competition. You can also down load an example business scenario.
Q : What is my role at this event?
A : It is useful although not compulsory for teams to be accompanied by a member of staff, acting as their team 'champion'. Once you've got your team to the registration desk, the role of 'champions' is to support your students, ensuring that they are well equipped and confident to give their best and generally make sure they know what they are doing. We ask that you don't play a major role in helping with the competition itself as this is a learning experience for the students. However, the final is incredibly intense and you will have a useful role to play in keeping your team focussed and generally looking after them. Experience tells us that this role can be incredibly rewarding.
A : All of the student teams will stay at Jurys Inn, just a few minutes walk from the university campus. We can arrange accommodation for you also at this hotel, or, if you prefer, at another of our local hotels. We have secured preferential rates for this event for staff members attending with teams and so the cost for champions to attend for the two days, including all food and a free place at the FLUX Enterprise Conference is just £200.
Q : How can I find a sponsor for my team?
A : There are many ways in which teams can raise the entry fee for FLUX 2009 and so we hope this isn't a barrier to getting involved. You might be able to access funds from an internal budget. This will depend on your institution but sources might include faculty, school, college or departmental budgets; careers services; business development or relations departments; students' union; widening participation departments; CETLs or other institution wide teaching and learning streams; it might be possible to secure institutional support at chancellery level. External sources will again vary but sources could include regional development agencies; enterprise associations; local or national employers; local Business Link offices or other business intermediaries. Details of every team sponsor will be included in the FLUX brochure and their click-through logo will be included on the FLUX website. There is also the opportunity for you to recognise your team sponsor through in-house publicity, local press releases, etc. If you want to enter a team and are struggling to find a sponsor, please phone us for advice. We can't offer funding but will try to help.
Q : What is the FLUX Enterprise Conference?
A : With two days away from your desk, FLUX is the perfect opportunity to think about ways of offering enterprise opportunities in your institution and share with others what you are already doing. To facilitate this, on Day Two of FLUX 2009 the University of Plymouth is hosting an Enterprise Conference, aimed at higher education staff. Attendance at this event is free for all FLUX Champions.
Q : How much does it cost to enter a team in FLUX 2009?
A : The entry fee for FLUX 2009 is £1,000 per team. This covers accommodation costs for the students (two nights at Jurys Inn), all catering throughout the event (including breakfast, lunch, snacks and evening meals), evening entertainment and all FLUX competition playing materials. The only cost to students once here is their bar tab and the only other cost is travel to and from Plymouth. On our site you will find details on how to get to Plymouth, including air fares starting at just £29 each way for flights to and from Plymouth (taxis will cost around £10 from the airport to hotel) and the university and hotel are just a few minutes walk from the train station.
Q : What if our team needs an extra night's accommodation?
A : We have negotiated a discounted hotel rate for this event with Jurys Inn. Contact Hayley Melhuish Hayley_Meluish@jurysinns.com at Jurys when booking your additional night.
